| Forum: Are comics and graphic storytelling
trash? Introduction

The matter for this forum is the question "Are comics
and graphic storytelling trash?".
My name is Anders Hjorth-Jørgensen.
As a historian on comics and graphic storytelling I am here at The Hong Kong Arts Festival
and EuroComics 98 to represent Denmark and my own creation, The Comics Museum in Denmark.
But today I´ve also been asked to chair this forum.
At first I would like to present the other participants. Or better, I would like them to
present themselves:

And then let me ask all of you this question:
Are comics and graphic storytelling trash?
And let me start to answer it myself:
Yes! and No!
In my childhood in Denmark in the 1950’s there was no doubt at†all:
Comics and graphic storytelling were pure trash!
This I was told by all my teachers at school and by the public opinion.
They told me so because they didn’t know anything about this form of storytelling.
OK! It had something to do with drawing and art. But it wasn’t fine art!
It had something to do with words and writing. But it wasn’t literature!
The critics didn’t see comics and graphic storytelling as an art of expression in
itself - as a unique fusion of medias such as literature, art, theatre and film. A fusion
characterized by its own expressive rules.
In Denmark you still meet people, who look upon all comics and graphic storytelling as
pure trash. This they were taught in the 50’s an later on.
And of course there are many bad comics and poor graphic storytelling. As there are bad
literature, bad films, art, theatre, music etc.
But I claim, that compared to the total number there are as many remarkable comics and
graphic stories as there are remarkable novels, movies, theatre plays and music.
So why talk about comics and graphic storytelling as trash? Can anybody give me an answer
to that? |
